There’s an art to sewing, whether you do it by hand or use a machine. While there’s nothing wrong with honing your skills through hours of intensive labor, anyone who spends a lot of time threading needles, practicing uniform stitches, and trying to keep knits from binding on a machine will appreciate advances in sewing technology.

New technology can save you a lot of time and trouble, whether you sew for fun or earn a living through stitching. With the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) in full swing, cloud computing and the internet of things (IoT) are finding their way into every industry, including textiles and apparel manufacturing.

Here are some advances every avid sewist should have on their radar.

Convertible Conveniences

If you’ve been using a sewing machine for very long, you’re probably accustomed to a lengthy process any time you have to make major stitching switch-ups. Between changing the bed, the feed, the foot, and the needles — not to mention threads and bobbins — you lose a lot of time whenever you start a new project.

For busy sewists working in high-volume settings or those who take on a variety of smaller projects, this wasted time quickly adds up. Luckily, some sewing machine manufacturers now offer versatile features that ease these transitions. Convertible options like submerged bed to raised bed function and mode-switching software mean that you don’t have to change parts inside the machine.

Multifunctional, Modular Machines

If you need different machines for sewing, serging, embroidery, quilting, and other tasks, you’ll have to make a big financial investment. You’ll also have to find enough space to house all of your equipment. An emerging alternative is modular machines that do it all.

When you can switch out a few parts instead of moving from machine to machine, you’ll save space and money, as well as cut down on maintenance and repair costs. The ability to use just one machine for serging and sewing or flatbed and long-arm functionality instead of relying on multiple sewing stations is a major convenience for many sewists.

Ditch the Pedal

In machine sewing, the pedal is a necessary evil. This component has evolved over the years from manual push pedals to responsive electric models. However, almost every new machine still comes with a frustrating learning curve.

What if you didn’t need a pedal? With some machines, you don’t. Pedal-less sewing technology is a growing field thanks to automation, sensors, and other technological advances.

Some pedal-less machines let you set the adjustable feed to your preferred speed and use a start/stop button. You can also look for a machine that uses sensors and an “intelligent mode” to analyze fabrics, auto-adjust, and detect and correct stitching errors in real time.

Auto-Swap Bobbins

One of the most promising and welcome additions to the sewing machine marketplace is the automatic bobbin changer. Avid sewists know the frustration of having a bobbin run dry, halting their progress and requiring an immediate, manual swap to get back to work.

With an automatic changer, the switch can happen seamlessly (so to speak) in just a few seconds, with no user input required. Some machines hold multiple bobbins to significantly curb the time spent swapping singles every time they run out of thread.

This option has seen massive popularity in embroidery machines, but sewing machine manufacturers are starting to catch on, too.

Feed Your Machine… Digitally

Some people love the control of manually feeding fabric through a machine. Others prefer to save time with automated sewing technology that digitally manages feeding for them.

This technology requires you to add a plug-in belt that manages the top half of the fabric and digitally coordinates with existing feed dogs to automate fabric movement through the machine. You can still adjust the speed as desired and use a lever to activate and deactivate the belt.

This technology is especially useful when sewing multiple layers of fabric or challenging textiles, as it prevents shifting and bunching to ensure smooth operation.

Sensors and Sensibilities

Sensors can alert you when there’s activity at your front door or your car engine overheats. They can also help you track and manage sewing activities.

Vision sewing is one major advance, in which the machine analyzes digital images to generate stitch patterns and guide stitch placement, in some cases even projecting stitches onto the fabric so you can confirm before automated sewing begins.

Then there’s voice-guided sewing. If you walk away from an automated machine to attend to other matters, you could return to find progress has stopped, leaving you to solve the puzzle of why and address the snafu. Voice-guided systems conduct the investigation for you and audibly inform you about what’s wrong and how to fix it.

There’s an App for That

One wonderful aspect of IoT growth is that so many machines and devices can be integrated remotely to deliver convenient control from a smartphone or tablet. You might be surprised to learn what this means in terms of sewing technology.

For starters, some machines allow for remote connection and control via a mobile app, allowing you to not only adjust settings for one machine but also to copy and share these settings among multiple machines. This can be handy for a small sewing operation, but it really shines for large-volume businesses that offer batch services and frequently switch settings for new projects.

Real-time mobile monitoring is another godsend for sewists who manage multiple machines or projects simultaneously. This feature allows you to track machine progress and adjust remotely, minimizing downtime and boosting productivity.

Get on Board With New Sewing Technology

Not every sewist or sewing operation needs every new bell and whistle. However, advances in machine technology and connectivity make it easier than ever to streamline processes and cultivate versatility.

The right technologies will save you time and, in some cases, money. Most importantly, they make life easier for anyone who spends a lot of time sewing.

If you want to learn more about emerging sewing technologies, the knowledgeable team at GoldStar Tool is always happy to help. Contact us now to find everything you need to succeed.

Sewing is among the many once-basic life skills that have fallen prey to the busy modern lifestyle. These days, many people can’t so much as sew on a button.

If you’re one of the few who excels in this craft, you might be wondering whether you can turn your skills into cash. And if you’re already making money offering sewing services, you may be keen to take your small business to the next level.

How can you expand your enterprise and turn your passion into a lucrative payday? Here are a few tips to pave the way.

Notions of Grandeur

Before you take your talents into the professional sphere by starting or growing your sewing business, you must first settle on the type of services you’ll offer. You have several options to focus on when launching a small business.

Repairs and Alterations

Many sewing professionals cut their teeth on repairs and alterations. This high-volume work is a great way to hone your skills and gain experience with different fabrics, techniques, tools, and equipment.

Whether you get more experience by working for an established alterations shop or leap right into a private venture, this option is ideal for novices looking to become seasoned professionals.

Apparel and Accessories

The dream for many avid sewists is to design and sell their own apparel and accessories. A blend of creative artistry and technical precision, this type of sewing business holds high potential for personal fulfillment.

Whether you explore your own artistic vision with activewear, wedding apparel, or handbags, or opt to custom-design and create pieces for individual clients, you could make a name for yourself in the wide world of fashion. This is not an easy path, but it can pay high dividends if you’re talented and you manage your business well.

Home or Specialty Goods

If apparel and accessories aren’t your bag, consider leaning into home decor and accessories like cushions, throws, bedding, drapery, upholstery, and even lampshades. With options to create your own designs or customize for clients, you could establish a lucrative trade by collaborating with interior designers or serving clients directly.

You might also consider sewing specialty goods like automotive interiors, marine covers, or sporting equipment. Any product that requires stitching could be the start of a successful sewing enterprise.

Scaling Up to Mass Manufacturing

Running a solo business out of your home or a small studio space may suit you just fine. If you want more, consider scaling up to higher-volume manufacturing. This could take the form of custom cut-and-sew services, including pattern making, fabric cutting, assembly, sewing, and finishing.

You might offer private-label production, working with designers to bring their visions to market under their own labels. Your contributions to the partnership may include your design and manufacturing skills, facilities, and staff.

If you’re looking for something a little more niche, you could supply quilting and embroidery services to other sewing operations, interior decorators, or private clients.

Sowing the Seeds of a Lucrative Business

Once you’ve determined which sewing business track tickles your fancy, it’s time to examine how to make a success of your small operation and eventually expand. You must tackle several critical tasks before you can make your dreams of scaling up a reality.

Identify Your Niche

Much like clothing, design and sewing skills are not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Your best bet for realizing success in your undertaking is determining what makes you stand out from the pack, why people need your products, and how you’re going to sell them.

Your chosen niche will define your business and your brand, so nail it down early and make it the backbone of your operation.

Solidify Your Business Plan

A business without a comprehensive business plan is like an airplane without wings. You can’t expect your business to take flight without it.

Your plan should explain what you will sell, how you will make it, and how you plan to earn a profit. You’ll have to conduct some marketing research, pinpointing your target demographics and identifying pain points you can provide solutions for.

Then, price out launch and growth costs like facilities, equipment, materials, and labor. Forecast your expected returns to entice lenders or investors. From there, you’ll establish your supply chain and distribution network. Then, create goals and backup plans for the next 12 months, as well as long-term planning for up to five years.

It sounds daunting, but then, so is running a business.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Change is a foregone conclusion in life, and those who refuse to change can only stagnate.

There’s no reason to give up the steady type of work that keeps your sewing business operating. However, if you want to grow your customer base and have a chance at professional success, you also need to continue expanding your skill set and exploring more product and service offerings.

Network and Create Opportunities for Growth

Who you know can be just as important as what you know. Look for industry events where you can shake hands with other professionals and sell yourself and your business. You might even meet peers you feel comfortable collaborating or forming partnerships with.

Track, Analyze, and Adjust

All successful business owners know that things can turn on a dime. Always be prepared to pivot. Staying adaptable will allow you to take advantage of growth opportunities or avoid obstacles that could tank your sewing business.

Track every data point, analyze trends, and quickly adjust to changes to ensure longevity and drive growth.

Enjoy the Benefits of Expanding Your Brand

You may be comfortable with your small sewing business, but there are plenty of benefits to growing. Diversification could protect your profits during market downturns, while expansion will increase customer awareness as well as your reputation and income.

Finally, growth allows you to fulfill your professional potential. You just have to figure out how to expand and take the steps necessary to do the job right.

Sewing with elastic requires technique and even the best sewists can end up with twisted elastic. But with a few tweaks you can avoid this.

Elastic’s flexibility is what makes it great for waistbands, cuffs, sleeves, necklines and more, but frustrating when it twists while sewing. You can use our twist prevention tips to improve the comfort and fit of your garments.

Check Your Elastic Sewing Technique

Sewing with elastic casings can cause twisting since it requires feeding a twistable band through a narrow opening.

Instead of elastic casings consider using the direct sewing method. This is when you attach the elastic directly to the fabric without feeding it through a channel, giving it fewer opportunities to roll and twist.

Check the Fit of the Elastic Band

If the elastic band is too tight it will twist and roll inside the garment. An elastic that stretches on the body will twist uncomfortably.

You can prevent this by taking accurate body measurements before cutting the elastic. Measure the waist where the waistband will fit most comfortably and go from there.

For a finished garment that fits too tight try replacing the band with a longer one. This is an easy swap especially for garments that use elastic casing.

Use the Edge Stitching Technique

If sewing with elastic casings is unavoidable in your garment you can use an extra row of edge stitches to secure the elastic and prevent twisting.

After sewing in your casing secure it with an extra row of stitches about 1/16 inch in from the top of the fold. This is where you creased the fabric to fold it inward to create the casing.

These edge stitches give the elastic band less room to move around. Think of the edge stitching technique as a way to perfect the fit of the elastic band inside the casing.

Discreet edge stitches can also add a nice finish to the waistband of sewn pants.

Try to “Stitch in the Ditch”

“Stitching in the ditch” is a way sewists prevent twisting when sewing with elastic. You’ll pin the elastic to the fabric vertically inside the casing, allowing for plenty of stretch. To stitch in the ditch trick, turn your garment inside out. Find the seams on the waistband, the sides and back seam. Sew along the seam lines to secure the elastic without adding any visible changes to the garment.

Match the Elastic and Fabric Strengths

When the elastic you use can withstand much more stretch force than the fabric it’s sewn into, twisting can happen. Your fabric should not leave any gaps to allow for elastic rolling and twisting.

This happens when a high-strength elastic band is paired with a more delicate fabric. Instead try to match the strengths of the two materials. This may take some trial and error.

When all else fails try a lightweight elastic band to see if that fixes the problem.

Check for Poor Elastic Placement Inside the Casing

Sewing elastic inside casings can create gaps or weak spots in the casing that allow the elastic to twist more than it should in the fabric.

Tips to Correct Elastic Placement

One way to get proper placement is to pin the loose end of the elastic to a secure spot outside of the casing. That way when you’re feeding the other end through the elastic will stay straight while you sew it in.

Attach a Safety Pin to the Elastic Band

The end of the band that enters through the opening in the casing is often the reason for twisting the elastic. It’s easy for it to become rolled and twisted. Try hooking a safety pin through the front of the band to give you something to hold on to as you feed the band through.

Take Your Time

As you feed an elastic band through a casing work slowly and carefully to make sure the elastic isn’t twisted from the beginning. Feel the safety pin and band through the fabric and regularly check for any twists, bulges or bulky spots within the casing.

This can be time consuming but being thorough will save you time in the long run. You won’t have to adjust your work nearly as often (or ever) if you get the elastic placement right from the beginning.

Never Stitch In the Direction of the Stretch

Elastic stretches outward in one direction, which gives it the flexibility you need for things like waistbands. If you sew in that same direction along the band it will keep the elastic stretched out and cause it to twist frequently.

Buy Non-Roll Elastic

Non-roll elastic prevents twisting and rolling. It gives a comfortable fit without a bulky waistband.

You can get non-roll elastic at most online shops. Worth adding to your sewing supplies and just buy a better type of elastic for your needs. In this case non-roll elastic should work.

Sewing with elastic can elevate your sewing project. Elastic gives the stretch and structure needed to make well-fitting waistbands, shirt cuffs and more. To sew professionally or make high quality clothes, you will need to know how to add elastic.

There are two primary ways to sew elastic into garments. The two ways are direct sewing and using an elastic casing. We’ll teach you both methods so you can create pieces that fit perfectly. Use our guide to get started on your next creative sewing project.

Consider What You Want to Achieve When Sewing With Elastic

How do you know whether to sew elastic directly into a garment or use a casing? The answer depends on what you’re looking for.

Gathering fabric requires drawing it up into a line of stitching on the garment. This gives a neat yet bunched-up look to many waistbands and necklines.

If you want the ruffled look you should use the direct sewing method to add elastic.

Elastic casings are special channels that hold elastic bands in clothing. If you need your fabric to lie flat and smooth against the elastic band, a casing is your best bet. You can also use elastic casings to create adjustable garment areas, like drawstrings on pants.

How to Add Elastic Directly to a Garment Through The Direct Sewing Method

The direct sewing method takes some practice, but the creativity you will have in your future garments is priceless.

1. Take Accurate Body Measurements

First take measurements of the area that the elastic band will wrap around the person who wears it.

If you’re going for a slimmer fit, subtract two to four inches from your measurements. Once you feel confident in the length, cut the elastic.

2. Connect the Ends of the Elastic Band

Sew the ends of the elastic band together. A zigzag stitch will keep it secure especially if you sew over the connecting spot more than once.

If you want to eliminate awkward bumps or bulk in the elastic, sew a piece of fabric over the ends to smooth things out.

3. Pin the Elastic to Your Garment

Now it’s time to place your elastic band. Use four pins with equal amounts of space between them to attach the elastic band to the seam or other desired spot on your garment.

You want four even sections to work with as you sew the elastic in place. If you’re working near the edge of a piece of fabric, make sure the elastic band is at least a quarter of an inch below the edge.

4. Sew With a Zigzag Stitch

Use a zigzag stitch to sew the elastic band to the fabric. If needed, slightly stretch the elastic to ensure its length matches up with the attached piece of fabric.

Your zigzag stitches should extend all the way around the elastic band, slightly overlapping at the starting point for security.

5. Cover the Elastic Band (Optional)

If you don’t want the elastic to be visible in your garment, evenly fold the top edge of the fabric over the band. Fold in an inward direction for a smoother more discreet look.

Then sew the edge of the fold to the bottom of the elastic band using a zigzag stitch. As you stitch, pull the fabric and elastic band slightly to ensure the lengths are equal. Keep the stitches as close to the bottom edge of the fabric as possible. This will hold everything together neatly.

How to Sew an Elastic Casing Into a Garment

For the elastic casing method, you’ll sew a tunnel to feed the elastic band through. This method is great for making smooth waistbands or cuffs.

1. Measure Your Elastic Band Width

The casing on your garment should be about a half-inch wider than the elastic band itself. Take accurate measurements before you begin.

2. Create a Fold According to Your Measurements

Using this measurement, fold over the fabric where you will place the elastic band. Fold it evenly toward the inside of the garment to avoid raw edges. Secure this fold using pins.

3. Mark an Opening for the Elastic Band

Mark off an area on the casing where you can easily slide the elastic band in. The opening should be wider than the band by about a quarter-inch. You can use fabric chalk or pins to mark this opening.

4. Sew the Bottom of the Casing

To create a secure casing, sew the bottom edge of the folded fabric. Use a straight stitch spaced about a quarter-inch from the fabric’s edge. Do not sew over the marked opening for the elastic band.

5. Prepare the Elastic Band

Prep the elastic band to enter the casing by cutting it to the right length for your garment. Then attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic band to make it easier to slide it through the casing. Make sure the pin is closed before moving to the next step.

6. Feed the Elastic Through the Casing

Using the marked opening you left for the elastic band, feed the band through the casing. This takes careful manipulation of the fabric and safety pin to avoid twisting the elastic band or popping the safety pin open.

7. Sew the Ends of the Elastic and the Casing

Use a zigzag stitch to secure the ends of the elastic band and unite them. Next, you can safely close the casing by sewing over the marked opening you left for the elastic band.

Thread may not seem to be the most significant of sewing notions, but thread quality makes a bigger difference than many people realize. You likely already know that the color of the thread you choose enhances your finished project in many ways, from highlighting details to complementing fabric shades. However, the quality of the thread can impact the entire piece, regardless of color.

High Quality Thread Matters

High-quality thread doesn’t always mean high-priced, either. When you know which qualities to look for in a thread and why they matter, you can feel confident making a great selection at any price point.

Better Sewing Machine Function

Low-quality thread puts strain on your sewing machine and all of its components. Thread that is too light or too heavy for the fabric it’s being used with can unbalance your machine’s tension. This type of strain causes more wear and tear on parts. It could result in a need for more frequent servicing and repairs.

Good thread produces less lint than thread of poor quality. Less lint means less debris is being deposited in the machine’s hard-to-reach moving parts. Minimizing this buildup helps prevent mechanical problems and keeps your machine running smoothly.

Fewer Snags and Breaks

Whether sewing by hand or using a machine, nothing stops the creative flow like dealing with thread breaks. The disruption is more than inconvenient, as broken thread can tangle in moving machine parts and cause damage. Snags and breaks may also cause skipped stitches and compromise the quality of your work.

Choosing the sewing notions that are best suited to your sewing method and project can make the entire process of sewing more productive and enjoyable.

Higher-Quality Finished Projects

Whether you are just learning to sew or you are an experienced sewist, you want your stitches to be neat, even, and secure. Great sewing skills come with practice, but good sewing notions are also important.

Because it affects sewing tension, low-quality thread can weaken the look and security of seams. You may have more difficulty sewing pieces together neatly with low-quality thread, while wobbly seams and crooked corners lead to poor construction and lower the quality and usability of your finished project.

Faster Success for Beginners

Learning to lay out and cut patterns correctly, follow sewing directions, and master a machine that requires your fingers to be near a sharp, rapid-fire needle is no small feat. Beginning sewists should be proud of themselves for taking on the task, even if their early projects aren’t perfect.

Still, the right thread can be of particular benefit to new sewists. Using a high-quality thread can make learning to sew a less frustrating experience and help beginners create better projects.

Commonly Used Types of Thread

Before looking for signs of quality, it’s important to know which type of thread works best for your sewing project. Some of the most common options are cotton, polyester, and silk.

Cotton Thread

Cotton thread is made from twisting natural cotton fibers. The quality of the thread depends on the quality of the cotton. Egyptian-grown cotton is considered the highest quality because it provides long, stable cotton fibers.

When it comes to looks, cotton thread has a matte finish, which is appealing for sewists who prefer a classic or heirloom look. For example, quilters typically prefer cotton thread over polyester materials. Cotton also has the minimal stretch that some fabrics may call for.

Just keep in mind that cotton can shrink when washed, which can cause puckering in the stitches.

Polyester Thread

Polyester is a synthetic material that offers more strength and durability than cotton. It is made by wrapping polyester filaments, but there are several different styles of wrapping, each of which can affect thread quality.

Polyester thread provides some slight stretch to help prevent puckering and breakage and holds up well in garments that need frequent washing. Polyester also produces less lint than cotton and can help reduce sewing machine maintenance.

This type of thread comes in a variety of brilliant colors, making it a great choice for machine embroidery and other decorative sewing techniques.

Silk Thread

Another option is silk thread. This thread is delicate and generally more appropriate for fine fabrics and couture sewing, such as appliqué work and hand embroidery.

What to Look For in High-Quality Thread

It’s essential not to rely on price alone to determine which sewing notions are right for your project. Here are some specific traits that can help you choose the best quality thread.

Durability

Thread that seems dry or brittle won’t be very durable. Discoloration is also a warning sign that the thread may be old or made from low-quality materials. Look for a thread with a good color that feels strong when you tug on it.

Stretch and Recovery

Polyester thread stretches best, but even cotton should provide some flexibility. Avoid thread that breaks or weakens when you tug it slightly.

Finish

Some threads are made with special finishes for specific uses. When needed, look for thread that is water-repellant, fire-retardant, or anti-static.

Thread Composition

The method of composition refers mostly to polyester thread. Corespun polyester, also known as poly-wrapped, is a high-quality thread known for strength, stretch, and good stitchability. Filament polyester is made from twisting long strands of polyester fiber together. It is strong, though not as strong as corespun, and does not produce lint.

Monofilament polyester thread, on the other hand, is a single strand of fiber. This fine thread may call for tension adjustments. Spun polyester is made from shorter fibers and is one of the least expensive options, but it may produce high levels of lint and is more apt to snag or break.

Regular oiling is an important part of sewing machine care. Any moving parts occasionally need lubrication to keep working smoothly. For sewing machines, oiling prevents rust and helps stop the needle from catching and snagging on fabric. It also works to extend the life of the machine and reduce the need for expensive repairs.

However, incorrect oiling habits can cause more harm than good. Before you get that tiny bottle of oil out of your sewing kit, it’s vital to first ensure you know how to avoid some of the most common mistakes of sewing machine care.

How to Oil a Sewing Machine

The first mistake you can avoid is assuming you already know how to oil your new sewing machine. Every model is different, so before attempting any sewing machine care, read through the manual and check all the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations.

If you’ve inherited or purchased a machine second-hand, you may not have a manual. You can find free downloadable instruction manuals for hundreds of makes and models by searching online.

If your machine requires oil, you can generally use it on the thread take-up lever, in the bobbin case, on the handwheel, and on the shuttle race. Your instruction manual should provide a diagram to show all the areas that require oiling. Some parts may need to be disassembled beforehand.

To start, you’ll want to unplug and clean your machine. Remove the thread and the bobbin, and use only the types of lubricant that are recommended in your manual. Apply one or two drops in each place, and wipe away any excess.

It’s a good rule of thumb to use medium-weight scrap fabric to test your machine and make sure everything is working correctly. After testing, check once again for areas with excess oil. This precaution helps prevent oil drips from staining fabric once you begin sewing.

Common Mistakes in Sewing Machine Care

Cleaning and oiling your machine for the first time can seem intimidating. These tips will help you master the art of oiling and keep you “bobbin” along with all your sewing projects.

Not Oiling and Cleaning Often Enough

Following the manufacturer’s recommendations for all types of sewing machine care is smart, but if you are a busy sewist, standard recommendations may not be enough.

A general guide is to oil your machine every three to four months if you’re a light sewist. People who sew daily or frequently use heavy materials should oil after around 10 hours of use.

Skipping Professional Service

Regular cleaning and oiling at home can help your sewing machine perform better and reduce problems with the moving parts. However, even the best home maintenance doesn’t replace professional servicing.

You’ll want to have your sewing machine professionally serviced once a year if you sew frequently or use heavy textiles often. Those who only sew occasionally should have their machines serviced every two years.

Using the Wrong Oil

All oils are not the same, especially when it comes to a sewing machine that has many moving parts and needs to handle a variety of delicate and heavy materials. Sewing machine oil is lighter and clearer than other types of oil, so never use products like WD-40, car oil, or cooking oils.

If your instruction manual does not recommend a specific brand, any general sewing machine oil should be safe to use.

Not Cleaning the Machine First

Skipping this step could result in a dusty, linty mess that damages your sewing machine. When oil mixes with lint and debris, it becomes sticky and clumpy. This mistake can not only cause machine damage, but also make cleaning harder when you do get around to it.

Use a soft brush and canned compressed air to sweep away loose debris. If needed, a stiff lint brush can remove stubborn lint and fuzz. Pay special attention to cleaning all the areas that will be oiled. Wipe down these surfaces with a clean, dry, and lint-free cloth. You’ll then be ready to oil.

Not Removing the Necessary Parts

Simply placing a drop of oil here and there is not enough to keep your machine running smoothly. It may be necessary to disassemble certain parts of the sewing machine to clean and oil them properly.

In addition to the thread and bobbin, parts that may need to be removed for proper sewing machine care include:

Presser foot

Handwheel

Needle plate

Bobbin case

Keep a small screwdriver in your cleaning kit to make removal easy.

Ignoring the Signs Your Machine Needs Oil

The instruction manual for your sewing machine is your best resource, but a manual won’t know your specific sewing habits. If your machine needs more frequent oiling than the manual suggests, it will do its best to tell you.

Listen for increased noise when the machine is running. Sluggish movements and skipped stitches are also signs your machine is lacking oil.

It’s possible to over-oil, though. Remember to add only a drop or two of the correct type of oil, and wipe away any excess to prevent problems.

Extra Tips for Oiling Older and Vintage Sewing Machines

If you’re fortunate enough to own a classic or vintage sewing machine, it may not be possible to locate an instruction manual. Contact a professional sewing machine repair person. They may be knowledgeable about your model and willing to offer tailored tips on cleaning and oiling.

Older machines need gentle care. Use soft brushes for cleaning and thin, free-flowing oil for lubrication. Even if the machine is rusty or sluggish, don’t over-oil or use household lubricants, and don’t force rusted parts to move. Apply the standard one or two drops of oil, wipe away any excess, and test the machine.

With patience and some TLC, you can bring an older sewing machine back to its full glory.
